Video and Discussion:  Jesus and John Wayne
Tuesday, July 18 | 7:00 PM |  Room 202

In 2020 Calvin College professor Kristin Kobes Du Mez, Ph.D. published a New York Times Bestseller entitled, “Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation.” It’s a fascinating, historical look at how the Evangelical movement became more of a political movement than a spiritual, biblical one. “The book focuses on the militant masculinity that white evangelicals idealize and how it has manifested in a pattern of abuse among evangelical leaders” (from Wikipedia). Du Mez said she wanted to challenge White evangelicals to examine their core beliefs about Jesus’s teachings to “turn the other cheek,” love your neighbor and love your enemy. She also explains why Evangelicals have made the political choices that they’ve made.

Join Pastor Rich on Tues. July 18, 7 pm in Rm. 202  to view a video by Dr. Du Mez giving an overview of her book. Speak with Pastor Rich for more information.
